DIY Maje inspired bow sweater

I told you I was on a roll with sweaters this fall! This week’s DIY project is a black sweater that I’ve seen on Emma Stone and needed to have. Of course, I was not going to pay the full price of $305, but the DIY price of approximately $5. Pretty convenient, I’d say! The original sweater is by Maje, a label that I don’t know much of, but I didn’t need many supplies to create my own version.

What you need:

  • sweater
  • (matching) soft leather
  • scissors
  • (matching) thread and needle
  • a button

I had a turtleneck sweater, so I started by cutting off the neck. You can skip this step if your sweater is crew neck. Next, I cut a teardrop shape at the back, and blanket stitched it. You need to do this because adding the leather makes the sweater lose elasticity at the neckline, and you won’t be able to put it on if it won’t stretch.

Next, I cut a piece of leather of about 5 cm (2 inches) wide, with a length equal to the circumference of the neckline. On the right side of the sweater, I placed the right side of the leather, about 1 cm from the edge, and stitched it along the entire piece. You can use a sewing machine, but I was worried not to break mine. I folded the leather, covering the neckline, and stitched on the wrong side of the sweater, without it showing on the right side. I finished this step by stitching a button on one side of the leather trim, and a buttonhole on the other.

Next, cut a piece of leather that’s about 15 cm (5 inches) long and 5-6 cm (2 inches) wide. Fold it and stitch the ends together, on the wrong side of the fabric. Then, turn in on the right side, and use a smaller piece of leather to give it the shape of a bow, while also covering the stitch. See a more detailed tutorial on how to make a bow here. Finish by stitching the bow under the neckline, like a bow tie. Done! Wash by hand, in cool water.
